We place our corporate responsibility (CR) activities firmly in the context of the sustainability and the good management of our business operations.
To help you to understand what CR means to us, our approach is explained within the context of:
In the 10 years since our listing on the UK stock exchange in 1996, we have experienced a period of major organic and acquisitive growth to become the world's fourth largest international tobacco company, with around 14,500 employees worldwide. In that time we have grown from around seven percent revenue generated from outside the UK to over 75 percent.
Our rapid international growth by acquisition has created new opportunities and challenges. The range of issues which we have addressed has grown as a result of our geographical spread, multicultural reach and our integration of new markets.
This rapid growth has shaped our attitude to CR and our commitment to embedding CR into all of our business activities.

We focus on tobacco and tobacco-related products, manufacturing and selling a broad range of cigarettes, tobaccos, rolling papers, filter tubes and cigars in over 130 countries worldwide.
We take care in the way we manage our business, acknowledging the controversial nature of our products to some people.
We believe that no cigarette is safe and operate our business on the basis that smoking may cause human disease. We take our responsibilities seriously and do not challenge the public health message.
While there are many regulatory requirements that we must meet, there are many other areas where we have been proactive in voluntarily adopting standards. This ensures we conduct our business in a responsible manner.
We support sound, reasonable and practicable regulation of tobacco products. We believe that fair and reasonable regulation combined with well thought out local voluntary agreements is the most effective way to regulate tobacco.

Our products and our business activities have both positive and negative social, environmental and ethical (SEE) impacts on society. Our commitment is to manage these impacts responsibly.
Internal and external research, stakeholder engagement and benchmarking has shown that the key SEE issues we face as a tobacco company are:
